TOURISM THE WINNER FROM NRL’S BIG DAY
This year’s National Rugby League Grand Final played between the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and New Zealand Warriors at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, attracted an added bonus for Sydney tourism this year, TICNSW Executive Officer Andrew Jefferies said.
The Warriors unexpected Semi-Final win over the Melbourne Storm attracted keen interest from their supporters across the Tasman to snap up the last remaining tickets, flights and accommodation ahead of the Grand Final, snapping up the remaining 14,000 seats. The Grand Final attracted more than 82,000 fans and was watched by many millions of viewers across Australia and overseas.
Both QANTAS and Air New Zealand added additional flights and capacity to and from Auckland to meet demand. QANTAS added an additional 1700 seats with two additional return Boeing 737’s and Airbus A330 flights on top of the regular schedule to meet the extra demand.
Mr. Jefferies said that “research from Destination NSW indicates that the NRL Grand Final generates over $15 Million in new money for the State’s economy and attracts up to 20,000 interstate visitors to Sydney for this event. The NRL Grand Final is one of the nation’s most iconic events and our tourism businesses are grateful for the investment and exposure that the Final brings to our city.”
The New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell launched the Grand Final week celebrations, including light projections of the players from both teams on the Southern pylon of the Harbour Bridge as part of the Festival of Rugby League in the spiritual home of the game in Sydney. The Grand Final saw the Sea Eagles defeat the New Zealand Warriors 24-10.
