Scenic World in the Blue Mountains has announced it will commit to a $30 million redevelopment of one of its key attractions, the Scenic Railway. The investment of the railway will become the largest investment of a tourist attraction in Blue Mountains history.
This new investment in the world’s steepest incline railway will include the building of new top and bottom platforms, encompassing a historical interpretation and the construction of a new rail track with new Swiss-designed carriages, the fifth vehicle to operate on the former coal mine track since 1945. The existing scenic rail train continues to operate and has safely carried more than 25 million passengers to and from the ancient Jamison Valley floor. The new railway experience is scheduled to open in December 2012.
Scenic World has been operating since 1945 and was started by the Hammon family after the purchase of a lease of the Katoomba Colliery Limited. Now an international tourist experience visited by almost one million customers annually, it continues to build upon the entrepreneurial vision of its founder, Harry Hammon to transform an abandoned coal mine into an iconic tourist attraction.
